Belong pas de deux: Cristina Martinelli & Graham Bart (1982, Theatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro)
„Belong“, 1982 (Rio de Janeiro)
Perhaps, at the time, an evening that did not cause the audience to have many expectations.
We are writing about a period in which Mrs. Dalal Achcar was the the head of the Ballet direction in Rio.
"Danse Concertantes" (Sir Kenneth MacMillan) and "Sacre" (Norbert Vesak) were being shown and to "complete" the programme "in between", a very short piece to “fill a gap”, the “Belong pas de deux”, music by Syrix and also choreographed by Vesak.
Well, history can claim its rights there on the spot it is being made: Cristina Martinelli and Graham Bart simply “stole the show” – and there were numerous curtain-calls to prove that. One of these single moments, from which life should consist of!
Until some years ago I had not heard of this beautiful piece being shown again in any company’s repertoire but in 2013 Evelyn Hart and David Peregine had a strong success while performing it with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. There is a video to be seen on youtube, which I will not post here, due to the fact that I consider this “new” version slightly altered, not really as strong as the first one… I wish Miss Martinelli could someday coach a younger dancer in this role. The late Mr. Bart, a very masculine and powerful dancer, had the strength and power to perform it beautifully – I am sure that an appropriate dancer could be found nowadays.
