"Firebird" and "Ondine" with Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes: The Royal Ballet
After many, many years I have just watched once more Fokine’s “Firebird” and Ashton’s “Ondine” with Fonteyn and Somes as I have received not long ago a “DVD” (Yes, I am old-fashioned… and I won’t let netflix tell me WHAT I should watch!).
I was delighted. It is so important that those rare moments were preserved for future generations…
Of course, you cannot compare the “technique” with today’s (or better said, with what is understood as “technique” today as I must say that also the way you hold your hands and arms, the way you bent your neck etc. are for my kind of thinking pure technique).
On the other hand you cannot compare today’s “dancing” and Interpretation skills with this great and very special Royal Ballet’s era…
Simply magical!
P.S. This Rank Organization feature was once presented as a VHS - during the times in which Sir Anthony Dowell was still Royal Ballet’s director. A treasure for future generations.
